Losing My Breath by J Rose Black
A Marine never says die.
Neither does his princess.
Battle lines are drawn and sparks ignite when sheltered debutante Meridian Daly moves across the hall from grumpy veteran Marine Callan Brand.
“Hot, hilarious, and devourable.” – International Review of Books
A military romcom that reminds us snipers study “stalking” for their specialty. And that asking for help can sometimes take the courage of a hero.
“…a delightful and unexpectedly heartwarming journey…a must read.” – Literary Titan
Targeted Age Group:: Adult
Heat/Violence Level: Heat Level 4 – R Rated
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
This actually started off as a short(ish) story for a prompt: “I don’t know what he’s fixing but mine just broke.” (Appears in ch 4)
The idea was a new girl would move in across the hall and our grumpy “white knight in camouflage” would end up helping her with handyman-like things. Maybe she needed help… because it was her first apartment / first time on her own. Maybe it became a game at some point – one of them smitten with the other and so the smitten one keeps coming up with things to help with / to need help with.
Ultimately, I wanted him to be reluctant but interested. And I didn’t want her to be some helpless damsel… So as their backstories emerged on the page (I’m a total Pantser), something different began to take shape.
…the strangest things were the words at the top of each chapter. Might not seem like much to most people, but that’s not really a “thing” for me. And yet when I was drafting it, at the start of every chapter, this word would show up…
When I found out what the words were for, I knew this was a story that moved beyond me and what I found entertaining. Callan’s story was one I had to share with others.
It’s been a three-year journey to get here.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
As a long time fanfiction author, I have a cast of characters in my head… that generally run amok. There’s the grumpy alpha military veteran with a heart of gold (who happens to be Callan Brand). I also have a damaged rich boy who seems to have it all, is exceptional at ___, but is emotionally scarred. I have an amazingly brilliant engineer who doesn’t want to rock the boat kind of guy. An angry, ranting “I’m f’n awesome get outta my way, loser” type who makes waves on principle, but is super loyal and protective. These are the main MMC’s that have adventures in my brain.
And then I have the FMC’s who are smart, sassy, capable. They’re leaders, people who push for change. Some can physically kick tail alongside their male counterparts. Others are the kind that would be the proverbial general of an army.
Meridian isn’t the physical counterpart to Callan’s military prowess. But she matches every ounce of his stubborn nature and desire to save others.
And then I have a few dozen secondary characters who help to cause drama / trouble / all of the above.
