Dare to Tell by Tara Fox Hall

Urban single woman Jean Bane denies her dreams and ghostly visitations of impending death until a horrific active shooter event clarifies the messages as portents. In the aftermath, more ghosts visit Jean, saving her yet again in a car accident and asking for her to “come to Evergreen Hall”, to “bring it to justice”. Dreading their requests for aid, Jean ignores the ghosts and tries to go back to her former life. But after ghostly interference saves her life a third time, Jean leaves her boyfriend and friends for the small town of Blodgett Mills, to help restore the old estate called Evergreen Hall.
The new owner Carlton Fairhaven IV, real estate developer and recovering alcoholic, has grand plans for the family property, including transforming it into a bed and breakfast capitalizing on the Fairhaven family’s colorful history while downplaying the double series of murders of young girls decades before. But the crumbling mansion has ghosts of its own, many of which have witnessed or committed murder. When local young women began to go missing as they did ten years prior, Jean must decide if she dares to expose the hidden truth that has long festered within Evergreen Hall.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I write another series called Unhallowed Love about an indie movie production company, Pandora Productions. In each of the books (A Good Year, Year of the Demon, and Year of the Incubus, each which cover a calendar year) the mature woman heroine, Debbie Black, is working on 3-4 movies. These movies have to have background and be "fleshed out": a synopsis, a proposed cast, at least one setting, and possibly scenes. In the course of the series books, a movie is proposed called "Dare to Tell" about a woman who is saved by a ghost, making her indebted to its summons to come to an old gothic mansion to bring secrets hidden there to light. I liked the premise of Dare to Tell so much working with it in the course of the Unhallowed Love series that I decided to make it an actual book!

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The central character of Dare to Tell is Jean Bane. She's a young woman working a telemarketing job in a cubicle, much like I did in my first job. I wanted her to be matter-of-fact about ghosts; not the kind of person who went looking for them. She's not afraid to stand up for herself, but smart enough to run for it when she's in danger. Almost all the ghosts initially came from several nightmares I had: The opening sequence of the book with the man getting killed, the ghostly intervention in the active shooter workplace scenario, the pony ride with the ghost appearing to warn of impending death, even the later scenes of a house which was a long hallway that seemed to go back in time with changing walls, ending in an old bedroom filled with moonlit windows with some kind of unseen bird/animal coming toward me from the darkness.
