A Bark in the Night by MK Scott

Out of control preschoolers and their demanding parents has Nala turning private investigator over summer break. Her agency motto is discreet inquiries, which means nothing to her wanna be action star father or her competitive mother who are determined to help.

A hunky veteran turned cop, a helpful neighbor, and a rescue dog that talks only makes things interesting. Nala might even start to enjoy the job if whoever is trying to kill her would just give it a break.

Targeted Age Group:: 14-99
Heat/Violence Level: Heat Level 2 – PG

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Local readers wanted a book that took place in Indiana.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
They are entirely fictional, but I did base Officer Goodnight on a conversation from a Tupperware party.

She knelt on the floor, spreading out the letters spelling out N JONES, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR. DISCREET INQUIRIES. Perhaps she shouldn’t put the last part up. Her grandfather joked he never trusted anyone who extolled their own product, saying a baker who referred to his cookies as delicious did so because no one else would. As she huddled over the letters, trying to decide if she should forget the last line, the click of dog nails drew nearer.

“What’s with N Jones? Is someone else going to be working here?” His ears flicked forward as if waiting for an answer.

How did she rate both a talking and nosy pooch? Her lips twisted as she considered what to say when a thought hit her. “You can read, too?”

Max’s mouth dropped open and his long tongue lolled out. He stood staring at Nala before closing his mouth and shaking his head. “How about that? I never tried to read until now, and I can!” He let out a small howl and pranced around in a small circle. “Look at me, I can read! Didn’t even go to school. I got it all over humans who have to struggle to read.” His voice took on a delighted quality as he chanted his reading ability over and over.

“Enough!” Nala stood and clapped her hands together twice. “It was a spell. You can only read and talk because of a spell. You never actually learned.”

“Sez you. I could have learned. I bet your partner N Jones will be nicer to me.”
A small snort escaped her, realizing she’d take Max down a few notches. Wait, was she fighting with a dog?
“I’m N Jones.”

“No, you’re Nala Bonne. Karly said your name several times when talking to me.”

“Figures.”

“So, what’s with N Jones? Do you have spelling issues? Maybe I can help. Obviously, I’m a great reader. Makes sense that I’d be a good speller, too. Let me think about this. Nala. N.Y.L.A.”

She shook her index finger at Max. “You’re wrong. It’s N A L A. Besides, I want to sound tough since I’m not a preschool teacher anymore. Nala Bonne is a soft and fluffy name, which is great for preschool but not for a PI. I need something that sounds tough.”
